Rebecca Swanson Obituary

Rebecca Powell Swanson, a longtime resident of Warren, Pennsylvania, most recently of Williamsport, Pennsylvania died December 31, 2023, at Leighton Place. She was born August 3, 1927, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Maude W. Koller and George B. Koller. While attending Altoona High School, she was active in yearly musicals, in district chorus, and involved in a double sextet during her high school years. She graduated from Altoona High School in 1945. She met Henry L. Powell, her junior year at Grove City College. She graduated magna cum laude from Grove City College in 1949. She married Henry L. Powell on June 18, 1949, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and soon after, they moved to Warren, Pennsylvania where she lived most of her life. For many years she did substitute teaching. In 1972, she began teaching French in the Warren County School District, beginning in Sheffield Area High School, and then on to Beaty Middle School, and finally on to Warren Area High School, from which she retired in 1987. She joined the Warren First Presbyterian Church in 1950, where in the early years she taught Sunday School, served as a Deacon, was active in Bible Study circles for many years, and later became the Secretary of the Presbyterian Women's Coordinating Team. She was a member of the Warren Association of College Women, Retired Women Teachers of the City of Warren, Warren Forest Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, and a Full Life Member of the PASR. She enjoyed traveling, reading, playing the piano, doing crossword puzzles, playing bridge, and cheering on the Penn State Nittany Lion football team. Her family was the love of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry L. Powell, who died January 19, 1985. Through a hospice support group, she met Charles R. Swanson, and they married on August 15, 1987, and he passed away on December 23, 2009. She was also preceded in death by her grandson, Brad Laughner. She is survived by her two daughters, Betsy A. Laughner and her husband Jim, of Ocala, Florida, and Sharon K. Swanson and her husband Gary, of Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Also surviving are her granddaughter Jodi DiPenti and her partner Tracy Savage of Chesapeake, Virginia, grandson Zachary Swanson and his wife Ashley, of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, grandson Joseph Swanson and his wife Vanessa, of Celina, Texas, and six great grandchildren - Jessica (Josh) Croyle, Jimmy DiPenti, Brayden Swanson, Kyler Swanson, Henry Swanson and Olivia Swanson, as well as three great-great grandchildren, Xander, Caroline and Hayden Croyle. In addition, she is survived by one stepson, Randall A. Swanson and his wife, Eileen, of Warren, one stepdaughter, Debra S. Putler and her husband, Ottis, of Evansville, Indiana, as well as four step grandchildren - Lisa S. Ristau (Brian), Amy Swanson, all of Warren, Pennsylvania, Laura Clark (John) of Princeton, Indiana, Scott Putler of Evansville, Indiana. Donations can be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 300 Market Street, Warren, Pennsylvania. Peterson Blick has been entrusted with final arrangements. Private burial will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Russell, Pennsylvania. A memorial service honoring Rebecca will be held on Friday, February 2, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 300 Market Street, Warren, Pennsylvania.
