Beverly Petersen Obituary

Beverly Louise Petersen,86, passed away Friday, January 5, 2024, at the Rouse Home in Youngsville, PA. She was born May 23, 1937, the daughter of the late Paul F. and Geraldine (Pang) Mathis in Warren, where she lived all of her life. She attended South St. School, Beaty, and was a 1955 graduate of Warren High School. In 1959, she graduated from the former Indiana State College (now IUP), where she earned a bachelor’s degree in music education. Coming back to Warren, she taught for several years at Beaty Jr. High. She touched the lives of hundreds of children. On February 23, 1963, she married the love of her life, Kent Petersen, at Emanuel United Church of Christ, where she was the music director for 26 years. She also taught piano lessons to hundreds of students and could always be heard saying, “I had them in school,” or “I had them for piano.” During the 60’s and 70’s she was very active in Sweet Adelines, singing in the Kinzua Damsels and Barbersals Quartets, and directing the Warren Chorus. The quartets qualified for several international competitions and also sang for the dedication of the Kinzua Dam. In 1986 she became the music director at Grace United Methodist Church where she is affectionately known as ‘mother.’ She also directed the Warren Community Chorus, many choir festivals, the Western PA conference choir for several years, and was a clinician for the sacred music workshop in Ludlow. Directing Grace choir was her great joy. The choir sang everywhere, gave Christmas concerts for over 25 years, sang in the parking lot for many years, plus on the curbs, in store windows, and anywhere else they were asked. She was a devoted NY Mets fan, and whenever she was sitting, she was knitting. Her Christmas stockings and afghans can be seen in many homes. Surviving are a son, Dane and wife Becky of Warren, PA, and a daughter, Kara Winiarz and husband Jeff of Rolla, MO; one brother, James Mathis and wife Dianne of Queensbury, NY; one sister, Nancy Cogswell and husband Dennis of Henrico, VA; beloved friends, Beth and David MacPherson; several nieces and nephews; several great nieces and nephews; and her beloved choir. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kent, on September 25, 2014; her parents; grandparents; and several dearly loved pets.
