William L. (Bill) Newton, 94, formerly of Warren and Hershey, PA passed away peacefully on Friday July 24, 2015 at the Lebanon Valley Brethren Home, Palmyra, PA. Bill was born March 16, 1921 in Warren, PA son of the late James McCoy and Fairl R. (Loomis) Newton of North Warren. He was a longtime Warren resident and attended Warren High School. Bill was a decorated U.S Army combat veteran of World War II having voluntarily enlisted in 1939 to serve his country while still in high school. He was a Staff Sergeant and served with Company "A" 17th Armored Infantry Battalion during the Rhineland Campaign in Europe and was awarded the Bronze Star for valor and the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged in September, 1945 after being seriously wounded during combat in Germany. After military service Bill returned home and married his sweetheart, Ethel Flood of Warren on November 17, 1945 where they raised their family until they moved to Hershey in 1998. They were together for 62 years until Ethel's passing in 2007. He retired in 1982 from Warren State Hospital where he was employed for 30 years. During retirement he enjoyed woodworking, gardening, watching golf and listening to big band and country music. Bill is survived by a son, Craig and his wife Lucy of Hummelstown, PA; a daughter, Cynthia Stravato and her husband Mike of Sherman, NY; 7 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife Ethel, he was preceded in death by a son Robert, a sister Helen Dahl, and a brother James Newton. Friends will be received at the Peterson-Blick Funeral Home, Inc., 1003 Penn. Ave. E., Warren, on Saturday August 1, from 11 a.m. to 12 noon, at which time a funeral service will be held there, with Rev. J. Maier, pastor, First Church of the Nazarene, officiating, Interment will be in Warren County Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers and to celebrate Bill's life, the family requests donations be made in memory of Bill to a charity of your choice.
