Obituary

Virginia Petersen, 95, of Derby, NY and formerly of Warren, PA, passed away surrounded by her family on Wednesday, August 28, 2013.

Virginia was born October 6, 1917, in Warren, PA, the daughter of the late Christopher
and Mildred Maier. Virginia resided most of their life in the family home at 1409 Penna Avenue West.  She graduated from Warren High School in 1935 and worked at New Process Co. (Blair) for several years until she married John H. Petersen on July 3, 1940.  She and John later moved to "Rogertown" in the 1950's where she maintained her beautiful garden which surrounded their home behind Howe's True Valu.  She was a lifelong member of the Covenant United Methodist Church (formerly First Salem United Methodist) and previously First Evangelical United Brethern Church, where she taught Sunday School in the 1950's.  She enjoyed being a member of "The Quilters" at First Salem in her retirement years.   Virginia lived in Warren for 93 years, until moving to Derby, New York to live with her daughter and family.  She still considered Warren her home and anxiously awaited her WTO delivery to hear of any hometown news.

She is survived by her daughter, Christie Zygmunt, and husband, Alan; her grandchildren, Phillip Zygmunt, and wife, Kelly, and Ashley Zygmunt, and companion, Jacob Kitson; 2 great-grandsons, Christopher and Gabriel; her brother, Frederick Maier, and wife, Jeanne, and several nieces, great-nieces and great-great nieces as well as several nephews, great-nephews and great-great-nephews.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, John Harold Petersen; and her brother William "Bud" Maier.

Friends will be received at the Peterson-Blick Funeral Home, Inc., 1003 Penna. Ave. E., Warren, on Saturday, August 31, 2013, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., at which time a service will be held there with Rev. Kevin Haley, pastor, Grace United Methodist Church, officiating.  Burial will follow at Westview Cemetery, Starbrick, PA.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice of Western NY, 225 Como Park Blvd, Cheektowaga, NY 14227-1480 or a hospice of your choice.
