Verta M. Ittel, 96, of Warren, passed away on Friday, November 2, 2018, at Cambridge Warren. Miss Ittel had previously been a long-time resident on Church St. in North Warren. She was born in Warren, on November 9, 1921, one of twin daughters, of the late Leon G. and Ruth (Goodwin) Ittel. Following her graduation from Warren High School in 1939, she was employed at New Process. In 1947, she graduated from Chicago Evangelistic Institute, and later, from Vennard College in Oskaloosa, Iowa, with a bachelor's degree in sacred literature. She served on staff at CEI/Vennard for seventeen years, in various administrative positions: Assistant to the Business Manager, Manager of the Book Store, and Director of Student Placement. She also received a BA in Social Science from Penn College (Iowa), and pursued graduate studies in Social Science at the University of Iowa. In 1963, she returned to Warren to care for her parents. After two years with the Warren Red Cross, she began teaching 6th grade at Pleasant Township Elementary School. In 1967, she transferred to Beaty Junior High School. She taught 7th grade Social Science for 20 years, retiring in 1987. Miss Ittel then volunteered at the Historical Society for eleven years, until her vision became impaired. A committed Christian, she was a member of the Warren First Church of the Nazarene from the age of 13, teaching in the Sunday School, Children's Church programs and serving in the church visitation program. She also served as president of the 49ers group for eleven years and was a member of the Tuesday Breakfast group. Miss Ittel is fondly remembered for her artistry in oil painting, gracious, dinner gatherings in her home, her open door to visiting missionaries, and her enjoyment of world travel. She is survived by her nephew, Leon Ittel, of Fort Lauderdale, FL, and by her cousins, Graig Goodwin, Warren, PA and Mark (Linda) Goodwin, Duncannon, PA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Phillip M. Ittel; her twin sister, Arvilla Erickson; and her cousin, Curtis Goodwin, Warren, PA. Friends will be received from 10-11 am on Wednesday November 7, 2018 at the First Church of the Nazarene, 907 Pennsylvania Ave. E. Warren, PA 16365, with a funeral service to follow, J Maier, pastor, officiating. The family has asked memorial contributions be given to the Warren First Church of the Nazarene, 907 Pennsylvania Ave E, Warren, PA 16365.
