Obituary

Sharon E. Engel, 64, of Pleasant Township, went home to her Heavenly Father on Saturday, July 23, 2016.

Sharon was born with Down Syndrome on October 19, 1951 to the late Leonard J. and Edna I. (Yaegle) Engel. Even with her disability, Sharon learned how to do many different things over the years. She did not attend a regular school; instead attended a class in Warren, in the basement of a church which had been started for special needs children who could not attend a regular school. While there, she learned how to count, the A B C's and how to read; she continued there until deciding she did not want to go to school anymore. She stayed at home but continued to learn by printing words or sentences from magazines or newspapers and then would read what she had written.

One of Sharon's great loves was country western music of which she had acquired over 200 cassette tapes and listened to it daily. Besides her love of music, Sharon was always busy doing something which might include putting together jigsaw puzzles, coloring pictures, doing some hand sewing, weaving pot holders, reading the newspaper or her Little Golden books or watching TV, especially the news with her mother.

She had a great sense of humor; especially liked to tickle people any chance she got and enjoyed walking up behind her mother to scare her.

After the passing of her mother in 1993, Sharon remained at home with her brother until 1995 when she decided it was time to move out. At that time, she went to live at the Ruth M. Smith Center in Sheffield. While there, she went to work at the B.E.I. in North Warren for several years until deciding it was time to 'RETIRE'.

In July, 2010, Sharon's health began to decline and became a guest at the Warren Manor Nursing Home. While there, she continued to color her pictures, enjoyed playing bingo Saturday mornings, listening to music in the rec room, took any opportunity to tickle someone and rolled up and down the halls looking for whatever 'mischief' she could get in to.

Sharon loved people and over the years, many said that Sharon would light up a room whenever she entered. That light will be missed, but there is a comfort knowing that she is no longer in pain and she lives on.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Luella (McKean) Bailor in 2007.

She is survived by "Bingo", her little stuffed puppy who she took everywhere with her, two brothers, Leonard K. Engel of Warren,  Ronald L. Engel of Russell and a sister, Darlene (David) Cross of Warren; several nephews; a niece, several great nieces; and a great nephew.

Friends will be received at the Peterson-Blick Funeral Home, Inc., this evening, Monday, July 25, from 6 to 7 pm, at which time a funeral service will be held, with Rev. Marcus Briggs, officiating.

Burial will be private in the Warren County Memorial Park.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to a charity of choice.
