Ross Joseph Morell, 95, of Warren died Monday, May 9, 2016, at the John and Orpha Blair Hospice House. Ross was born March 19, 1921, in Warren, PA. He was the son of the late Louis and Frances (Colosimo) Morell.
Ross was a 1939 graduate of Warren High School. He worked as a grinder/polisher at Case Knife Works in Bradford prior to enlisting in the US Army Air Corps. A decorated veteran, Ross served as a radio operator / waist gunner on a B17. He was shot down over Berlin during his 19th mission and became a prisoner of war for 9 months until Liberation. Upon returning home, he took a position as a machinist at Sylvania for a number of years. After that, he followed his passion for photography by becoming a photoengraver at the Warren Times Mirror from which he ultimately retired.
Ross had many talents and hobbies, and was a very serious amateur photographer. In his 80's, he taught himself to use a computer and advanced digital photography software. He was also an avid woodworker, making many pieces of furniture over the years. He had also built muzzle loading firearms and enjoyed reading Westerns.
He is survived by two sons, Greg Morell, of Warren, and Mike Morell, and wife, Pam, of Erie; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death in 1992, by his wife, Anne M. (Olson) Morell, whom he married May 22, 1943, in Wichita Falls, TX; his son, Ross J. "RJ" Morell; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Morell; and brother, Louis Morell.
Friends will be received at the Peterson-Blick Funeral Home, Inc., 1003 Penn Ave., E., Warren, on Thursday, May 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. A private graveside service will be held at a later date in St. Joseph Cemetery.
