Obituary

Ronald L. "Swede" Johnson, 86, of Weldbank, PA, passed away on Saturday, November 16, 2024, surrounded by his family at his residence. Swede was born January 17, 1938, in Pittsburgh, PA, the son of the late Lawrence and Frances (Bodnar) Johnson. He was a 1956 graduate of Sheffield High School. Known during his football years as "Horse" Johnson and was a member of the 1955 Championship football squad. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy immediately after graduation as a boiler tech II aboard the USS Newport News from 1956-1960 with three cruises in the Mediterranean. He was very loyal to his ship and the many friends he made while serving. He attended countless reunions with his wife to catch up on the people he met during his duty and attended their latest reunion in Providence, RI in June of 2024. Following his service time in 1960 he operated Johnson's Keystone Service, a gas station in Weldbank and bought it from United Refining in 1963. While operating the station, he opened up the Johnson Tire Service in 1991 and continued to work until present. He enjoyed working with his loyal employees that he considered family. He ran a 24-hour wrecker service and also did countless service calls helping many truckers no matter what time of day his entire career. For Swede's growth in tire sales over the years, he was awarded trips to Puerto Rico, Aruba, Panama Canal, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and also took a sailing ship from Rome to Monte Carlo, and his last trip was to Venice, which was one of his favorites. Swede attended holiday masses with family at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church in Sheffield. He was a member of the USS Newport News CA148 Association, the Brokenstraw Antique Tractor Club, the Eagle's Club, and a former member of the Navy Cruiser's Association. He enjoyed watching his favorite sports teams, the Pirates, Steelers, and Penn State. Swede will be long remembered as a loving and hard-working husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. He also had a love of antique tractors and restored the original tractor from his youth farming days. This led to competing at many tractor pulls in the area which he enjoyed greatly. Cardiac rehab had a special place in his heart where he met many friends and had the best therapists anyone could ask for. Swede is survived by his wife, Lucrecia "Peaches" Rogers Johnson, whom he married on June 10, 1967; two children, Marcia Hoffman and husband Jeff of Weldbank, and Larry Johnson and wife Michelle of Warren,; five grandchildren, Mitchell Hoffman, Ashley Hoffman, Logan Johnson, Sarah Hoffman, and Sydney Johnson; brother, Charles Johnson and wife Dorlian of Hernando, FL; and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at Peterson-Blick Funeral Home, 1003 Pennsylvania Ave. East, Warren, PA, on Saturday, November 23, 2024, from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. A private service and burial will be held at Cherry Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to Allegheny Valley Veterans Center, 100 N.
