Raymond E. Smith, 95, of Pleasant Township, died Wednesday, July 20, 2016, at his home. Raymond was born September 18, 1920, in Warren. He was the son of the late Frank J. and Cecelia (McGuire) Smith.
Raymond was a 1938 graduate of Warren High School. From 1943 to 1946, Ray served with the US Army Signal Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theatre of Operations, New Guinea, Leyte P.I. and the Japan Occupation. He was honorably discharged as a Master Sergeant. He was recipient of the following citations: Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Emblem, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with Three Bronze Stars, WWII Victory Medal, Philippine Libratory Ribbon with Two Bronze Stars, and he later received the US Presidential Commendation and Philippine Presidential Commendation Badges for the Philippine Liberation. He was employed with the Bell Telephone Company of PA for 35 years, retiring as a supervisor.
He and his beloved wife, Phil, enjoyed revisiting where Ray served in the military and also spent winters in Jekyll Island. Ray was also an avid golfer and hunter.
He was a member of the former Epworth United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Moose, Elks Club, a 60 year member of the Tyrian-Commonwealth Lodge 362, the Zem Zem Shrine Temple, Warren Shrine Club, Warren Tassel Club, Zem Zem Legion of Honor and the American Legion. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also belonged to the Telephone Pioneers of American, North Western Shrine Association, American Association of Retired Persons, Warren County Motor Club (AAA), a former member of the Eagles Club, and a life member of the National Rifle Association.
He is survived by three brothers, Gail Smith, and wife, Sandra, Richard Smith, and wife, Donna, and Donald Smith, and wife, Beverly, all of Warren; as well as many nieces and nephews; and many friends.
In addition to his parents, Raymond was preceded in death on April 14, 2008, by his wife, Phyllis Antcliff Smith, whom he married October 3, 1941, at the Epworth United Methodist Church, in Warren; and three brothers, Boyd Smith, Frank "Boots" Smith, Jr., and Walter R. Smith.
Friends will be received at the Peterson-Blick Funeral Home, Inc. 1003 Penn. Ave. E., Warren, on Friday, July 22, from 5 to 8 p.m., and on Saturday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., at which time a funeral service will be held there with Rev. Marcus Briggs, chaplain, Warren General Hospital and Rouse Home, officiating.
