Obituary

Melva L. Spicer, 83, of Gouldtown, passed away on Thursday, July 8, following a recent illness. Melva was born May 4, 1938, in Lottsville, PA, the daughter of the late Melvin and Eva Carter Johnson. Melva was a lifelong area resident and a 1956 graduate of the Youngsville High School. She worked for Curtis Oil for more than thirty years, retiring from there and then worked for Northwest Savings Bank as a receptionist, retiring at the age of 81. She was a member of the Wiltsie Community Church. Melva was a very outgoing and friendly woman and was always helpful to others. Melva appreciated all that life had to give. Family was her life. Melva loved her family, and her family loved, and adored her. She loved nothing better than getting together with the people she loved for family card nights, picnics, or just chatting over coffee morning, noon, or night. She was a masterful host and loved to dote on everyone. Sunday drives, Sunflowers and camping brought joy to her life. She enjoyed sitting on her front porch watching the birds. Especially the Orioles, and the Tree swallows she nicknamed George and Hellen. She spent hours watching the short fat hummingbird Chevy and her affectionately named "Stumpy". It didn't matter as long as the people she loved were there. People who know her always spoke of her kindness, grace, compassion. She had an infectious smile that made anyone's day better. She loved good food, especially chocolate. But the thing she loved to do most was cuddling on the couch with her Husband. Melva is survived by her husband, Francis M. Spicer, whom she married on June 26, 2013; her children, David Luther and wife Beth, Norfolk VA, Diane Luther, Ocala, FL, Rebecca Stanley and husband Shane, Gouldtown, PA, Bethany Hoppie and husband Tyson, Arlington, VA, Ben Spicer, Lebanon, TN, and Randal Spicer and wife Brenda, Gouldtown, PA; twelve grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Paul Johnson.
