Lillian Maxine Rue Hanson, 99, formerly of Edgewood Street, Warren, PA, died on Sunday, December 20, 2015. Maxine passed away at the John and Orpha Blair Hospice House. Maxine was born on May 27, 1916 in Logansport, Indiana. Maxine came to Warren, PA. In 1934 from Indiana to be close to her brother, the late Harland Rue. Maxine graduated from Shortridge High School, Inianapolis in 1933 at the age of 17, with a focus in Business. As a child she took private piano lessons and was considered gifted in both piano and art. Upon moving to Warren she continued her studies at the former Warren Conservatory of Music, at 13 Market Street. Maxine always loved learning, and took private lessons in Russian, French, Computer and Writing. She attended Edinboro State College for Drawing and Painting, and attended Jamestown Community College for Drawing and Pottery. She was a self taught sculptress, and furthered her learning experiences pursuing and enjoying the works of artist, authors, poets and composers. Her favorite artist were Van Gogh and Monet, and her favorite composer was Bach. Upon arriving in Warren, Maxine was employed by the New Process Company (currently Blair Corporation) as an Executive Secretary. She and her husband, the late J.R. Hanson, later owned and operated E. D. Evertts Hardware, where she was Secretary and Book keeper for 25 years. She then worked as a Legal Secretary for the law firm of Stone, Harper and Clinger (currently Harper and Marti) for 16 years. Maxine also volunteered in many ways : as a PTA President at Home Street School; as a Girl Scout leader; for Warren General Hospital in One-Day Surgery and as a Gray Lady at their blood bank and as a Proctor for the Crary Art Gallery. In her later years she knit sweaters for needy African children thru the Guidepost Sweater project. Maxine was also active in several organizations. Along with her husband, she belonged to a bowling league, the Players Club, the Warren Dance Club, the Warren Art League, the Warren Concert Association and the First United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school. Served on many commissions, and with her husband hosted ghetto children through the summers. She was a member of the Woman's Club of Warren, the Garden Club, Antique Study Club, Public Library of Warren and was active in swimming exercise classes at the YMCA. She was a long term member and performer and past president of the Philomel Club, where she served on the Audition and Piano Committees. Maxine had many defining hobbies. Her attention was given predominantly to music and the piano, which were her life's blood, but she also enjoyed playing Scrabble, Bridge, doing cross-word puzzles, painting and drawing. She loved reading books and discussing them with others, and writing letters, short stories and poems. In her 90s she belonged to five book clubs. Maxine was generous in sharing her talent for baking. She became the "cookie lady" for family, friends, and neighbors (especially kids.) She baked fresh bread regularly, making special braided and iced rolls for family and friends at Christmas, and hot-crossed buns at Easter. Maxine enjoyed inviting friends over for lunch or dinner frequently. Her family also considered her a "miracle worker" with leftovers. Some of her other hobbies were knitting sweaters, hats and mittens and sewing dresses for her four daughters, and gardening. She loved growing roses and sunflowers at the family cottage. She and her husband cultivated a Victory Garden during World War 11. Even though Maxine was an active woman outside the home, she was a wife and mother first. She raised her children where her heart was, both in Warren and at the family cottage on Lake Erie at Portland Bay, N.Y. A strong belief in laughter was a major part of her philosophy of life. Her quick wit and positive attitude helped her through many difficult times. Maxine was preceded in death by her mother, Elsie Iona Ora Ullery Rue Hantz; her father, Stanfield (Stanley) Rue; her step-father, Henry (Jimmy) Hantz; her sister, Lorraine Clarice Rue Herran and husband, Donald; her brother Harland Joseph Rue and wife, Ora. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Franklin (Russell) Hanson, whom she married September 1, 1937; their son, John Douglas (Dougie) Hanson and nephews, Harland (Buzz) Joseph Rue ll, and Roger Rue. Maxine is survived by four daughters; Beverly (Carol) Hanson Redding (Dr. Foster) of Saint Claire Shores, Michigan; Kristi Rue Hanson-Appleby (Dr. Gordon) of Washington, D.C.; Victoria Ann Hanson of Jamestown, N.Y. and Lisa Lynn Hanson Blair (David) of Warren. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Susan Diane Redding Decker (Matt) of Utica, Michigan; Dr. Steven Foster Redding (Debbie) of Clinton Township, Michigan; Karen Elizabeth Redding Tarr of Warren, Michigan; Jane Kirsten Redding Garland (Scott) of Plattsburgh, New York; Victoria Elizabeth Cawthon and John Bernard Cawthon lll, both of Warren, Pennsylvania. She fulfilled the special role of grandmother for Emily Blair Banks of Hummelstown, Pennsylvania. Maxine is also survived by fourteen great-grandchildren Hannah Lori Decker; Evelyn Grace Decker; and Claire Alyce Decker of Utica, Michigan; Steven Jeremy Redding; Foster Alloyishus Redding; Jessica Noelle Redding; and Danielle Alexandra Redding of Clinton Township, Michigan; Steven Foster Garland and Ethan Jacob Garland of Plattsburgh, New York; Jeremiah Bernard Cawthon of Butler, Pennsylvania and Russell Evan Hannold of Warren, Pennsylvania. She fulfilled the special role of great-grandmother for Dahlila Jade Forsgren of California and Warren, Pennsylvania. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Peterson-Blick Funeral Home, Inc., 1003 Penna. Ave. East, Warren, PA, 16365 on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 from 6 to 8 pm. A funeral service will held at 11:00 am, on Wednesday, December 23, at the First United Methodist Church, 200 Market Street, Warren, with Rev. Jon Swart, associate pastor, officiating Memorial contributions may be made to the Organ Fund at First United Methodist Church,200 Market Street, Warren, the Public Library of Warren, 205 Market Street, the Scholarship Fund of the Woman's Club of Warren, 310 Market Street, the Philomel Scholarship Fund, c/o Robert Merenick, Treasurer, 101 North Carver Street, Warren, Pa. or your charity of choice.
