Obituary

James "Jim" Saines, 88, of the Cambridge, Warren, PA, passed away Wednesday,  April 8, 2015, in his home.  He was born in Kane, PA on July 22, 1926, the son of the late Steve and Helen Liagas Saines.

Following graduation from Kane High School, he attended the University of Tennessee where he played college football in the early 1940's.  Later he played semi-professional football for the Johnsburg, PA Shamrocks.

In 1944 he enlisted in the US Army where he served until October of 1946.  During WWII he served in the south Pacific where he helped liberate the Philippines.  In 1945 he played football for the US Army on the all-star Army-Navy team where he performed with extraordinary prowess on the gridiron and received Honorable mention on the All-Pacific Team.

Jim will be remembered as a kind, caring, and considerate man who had a deep love and appreciation for his family and friends.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed as the Activities Coordinator at Warren State Hospital and The Rouse Home in Warren, PA.  He was avid lover of sports and was a Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Referee for over 40 years.

After his retirement, he was employed by the Area Agency on Aging in Pennsylvania as a Meals on Wheels and Field Trip Driver.  He was lifelong member of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Jamestown, NY.

Surviving are 2 children Craig Rickerson of Plant City, Fl and Betsy Ivy of Tampa, Fl; 6 grandchildren Debbie (Dave) Bush of Jamestown,NY,  Richard (Michelle) Foster of Orlando,FL,  Andy (Dawn) Greenlee of Jamestown,NY,  Sherry (Bill) Powell of Seffner, FL, Mark (Kim) Stewart of Plant City, FL, Kim (Lewis) Mitchum of Alpharetta, GA; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother George Saines of Shohola, PA; 7 nieces and nephews Steve (Sherri) Saines of Logan, OH, Julie (Mitchell) Meade of Middletown, NY, Jennifer (William) Pinch of Middletown, CT, Penelope (Ira) Bickoff of New Paltz, NY, Georgia Acuri of Cleveland, OH, Joni (Hank) Thon of Atlanta, GA, and Gus (Kelly) Saines of Wheeling,  WV.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Audrey Helms Saines who died in 2005, a son Steven Rickerson, daughters Sandra Stewart and Diane Matuszewski and a brother Gus Saines.

Friends will be received at the Peterson-Blick Funeral Home, 1003 Penna. Ave. E., Warren, on Monday, April 13, 2015, from 6 to 8 p.m.   The funeral will be held at the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 21 Mount Vernon Pl, Jamestown, NY, on Tuesday, April 14, 2015, at 11 a.m., Fr. George Zervos will officiate.  Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Warren, PA.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Jamestown, NY or to Hospice Warren County, 2 West Crescent Park, Warren, PA 16365.
