Obituary

Herbert Curtis "Herb" Bowley, 86, of Barnes, passed into the next life on Friday, September 11, 2015, at Warren General Hospital after a brief illness and stay at the Warren Manor.

He was born November 6, 1928, to the late Winfield and the late Bertha (Benson) Bowley. Herbert was named after President Herbert Hoover and Vice-President Charles Curtis, whom were elected to office on his day of birth. Herb unfortunately never knew his father, who worked as a horse teamster and was killed in a woods wagon accident several months before Herb was born. He was the youngest of five children and was very close with his brothers and sisters, whom helped to raise him.

A lifelong Barnes resident, Herb worked in the oil fields for five years before serving in the US Army and spending time in Korea during the Korean Conflict. He then worked for Sheffield Township for 37 years in the road department, retiring as Roadmaster in 1991.

Herb was a member of the Sheffield Rod and Gun Club and the Sheffield Senior Center. He enjoyed hunting, gardening, and yard work. He also spent many hours in the garage working on his tractors or many other favorite projects, some of which never seamed to quite get completed.

Herb had a unique sense of humor, such as dressing up in his old Army uniform for the last episode of the hit TV show series, Mash, and have his truck license plate read "IMHERB" to answer the 1980's Burger King TV commercial question-"Where's Herb?" He also enjoyed listening to old time country music, and sometimes singing and yodeling some of his favorite country songs.

Herb is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Mrs. Jean C. Bowley, whom he married July 1, 1950; his children, sons, Curtis Bowley, and Craig Bowley, and wife, Cindy, all of Barnes, and daughter, Jill Bowley, of Sheffield; four grandchildren, Kate, Nathan, Sarah and Bryden; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Herb was preceded in death by his two brothers, John and Ralph Bowley, and his two sisters, Helen "Sis" Rapp, and Alvera "Sweetie" Harris.

Friends will be received at the Peterson-Blick Funeral Home, Inc. 1003 Penna. Ave. E., Warren, on Monday, September 14, 2015, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, at which time, a funeral service will be held there, with Rev. Ruth Ann Varrato, associate pastor, Barnes United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Barnes Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sheffield Volunteer Fire Department, 318 S Main St., Sheffield, PA 16347 or the American Heart Association, 3025 French St, Erie, PA 16504.
