Glenn Allen Culbertson, 80, of Warren, died on Sunday October 11, 2015 surrounded by his loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born November 24, 1934, a son of the late Jesse and Hazel Schirck Culbertson. He was a 1952 graduate of Warren High School and a 1956 graduate of Penn State University with a BS in Electrical Engineering. While he attended Penn State he was a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force and a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity.
Glenn is survived by his wife Carmen Greib Culbertson, whom he married on August 1, 1959 in Strasbourg, France; a daughter, Caroline Dorn and her husband David; three grandchildren, Dr. Stephanie Rugg and husband Kyle, Lyons, NY; Sophie Dorn Clearfield, PA and Philip Dorn Indiana, PA and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers Earl Culbertson and Leon Culbertson.
Glenn was on active duty with the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1959. He attended flying school to become a Navigator, specializing in Advanced Navigation, Reconnaissance and Bombardment. Upon completion of survival school he was stationed in Spangdahlem, Germany and flew with a tactical Air Force Reconnaissance wing.
Glenn retired after 22 years combined active duty and reserve time as a Major USAFR. When he returned to Warren, he was employed with Sylvania. He held several positions in engineering, manufacturing and general management in 37 years of employment in Warren, Puerto Rico and Haiti. Glenn was awarded 3 patents in the USA and 1 patent in Canada. He retired from Osram Sylvania (GTE) as the Engineering Manager in 1993.
Glenn was very active in the Warren Community. He was a Past Board member and President of the following organizations: Warren County Chamber of Commerce, Warren County Development Association, Warren General Hospital Board of Directors, Community Care Corporation of Warren, Community Care Foundation, Past Board member of the following: ARC Enterprises (now BEI, Inc), Warren County Chapter of the American Red Cross, and two Electronic Industries Association (EIA) Standardization Committees.
Glenn was an Ordained Deacon and Elder and held various offices including Chairman of the Administrative Committee at the First Presbyterian Church Warren, PA.
He was a Life Member of the following: Institute of Electrical Engineers(IEEE), and Former Director and VP of Chautauqua, NY Chapter of the Air Force Association(AFA), Society of Manufacturing Engineers(SME), Society of Automotive Engineers International(SAE), Penn State Alumni Association, Reserve Officers Association(ROA), Military Officers Association(MOAA) (formerly TROA), Bucktail Chapter MOAA and served as Editor of The Bucktail Briefs, Warren General Hospital Auxiliary, and Warren General Hospital Association.
Glenn was a member of the following: BPO Elks #223, Eagles Aerie #313, Lakewood Rod and Gun Club, Kiwanis Club, Phoenix Investment Club, Past Board member and treasurer of the Friends of the Library Theatre, WCCBI-EDD Board, and Past Trustee of the Miner Crary Trust.
Glenn was the Division Leader for the March of Dimes Walk America in 1992, 1993, and 1994. He was a Past member of the Board of Directors and Past President and Treasurer of the Warren Senior Center. Glenn was awarded the Warren County Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award in 1996.
Glenn was an avid downhill skier and enjoyed many trips with Carmen to Colorado. He liked teaching his grandchildren how to ski. His other interests included traveling, fishing, golfing, and bowling. He also enjoyed his cockatiel, Cinnamon.
Family and friends will be received on Friday October 16, at the Peterson Blick Funeral Home, 1003 Penn. Ave. E., Warren from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. There will be a visitation at the First Presbyterian Church, 300 Market Street Warren, on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at which time, a funeral service will be held there with The Rev. Jeffrey Ott, pastor, officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at Oakland Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Warren County 1 Main Ave. Warren, PA or the Warren Cancer Center 2 Crescent Park West Warren, PA or the First Presbyterian Church, Market Street Warren, PA.
