Gladys M. Birt, 88, formerly of Hultberg Road, Scandia, passed away Saturday, August 29, 2015, at her home in North Warren. Gladys was born December 2, 1926, in Tiona, PA. She was the daughter of the late Charles W. and Mable (Eldridge) Arp.
Gladys had been employed for thirty years as a custodian for the Warren County School District, retiring in 1997. She was a lifelong member and served at Scandia Covenant Church. Due to winter conditions and living in North Warren, she had attended Light of Baptist Church. She enjoyed all types of home working projects, especially making slippers and stocking caps, canning, and gardening.
She is survived by two sons, Eldon L. Birt, and wife, Shiela Rae, of Russell, and William "Billy" S. Birt, and wife, Young Ae, of Dover, DE; one daughter, Willo Mae Birt, of North Warren; six grandchildren, Todd Jimerson, and wife, Sarah, Paul Birt, and wife, Nancy, Christopher Jimerson, and wife, Colleen, Jed Birt, Williston Birt and Theodore Birt, and wife Rachel; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Gladys was preceded in death on January 13, 2011, by her husband, Williston A. "Willie" "Buster" Birt, whom she married August 3, 1945; her daughter, Tayna Birt Jimerson; great-grand-daughter-in-law Renee Birt; five sisters, Mattie Head, Lena Nash, Anna Boulder, Virginia Swanson and Clara Black; and eight brothers, Richard, Pete, Charles, Grant, Emery, Emerson, Clair and Andy Arp.
Friends will be received at the Peterson-Blick Funeral Home, Inc. 1003 Penna. Ave. E., Warren, on Wednesday, September 2, from 5 to 8 p.m. The funeral will be held at Scandia Covenant Church, 18 Peterson Road, Russell, on Thursday, September 3, at 11 a.m. Rev. Jonathan L. Meyer and Rev. Walt Venman, will co-officiate. Burial will follow at Scandia Cemetery.
