George Michael Spinney, 63, of 320 Crescent Park, Warren, died on Wednesday, May 23, 2012, while staying in Birmingham, Alabama.
Mr. Spinney was born July, 2, 1948, in Warren, Pa., the son of Lewis C. and Elizabeth Blair Spinney. He was a 1966 graduate of WAHS, a 1970 graduate of West Point, USMA, and in 1978 he received a M.A. at UNC at Chapel Hill. He was a Capt., Ret., in the US Army, serving in Military Intelligence, Counterintelligence, and Public Affairs assignments with posts in Fort Carson, Colorado, Vietnam, Fort Huachuca, Arizona, and Fort Meade, Maryland. He received the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.
After retiring, he was a teacher at the high school and college levels and was involved in coaching football and track and field at the junior and senior high school levels.
He is survived by a son, Jacob Michael Spinney, and a sister, Molly Spinney of New Wilmington, Pa.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or to the American Cancer Society.
A memorial service will be held at Oakland Cemetery, Warren, Pa., on Thursday, July 19, at 2 p.m., with Dr. Jeffrey Sterling, pastor, First United Methodist Church, officiating.
