Mckown
December 9, 1925 – November 24, 2014
George Edwin McKown, 88, of Cambridge, Warren, died November 24, 2014, at St. Vincent Hospital, Erie, PA, George was born December 9, 1925, in Tidioute, PA, the son of the late H. Hobson and Helen E. (Mowris) McKown. He was a 1943 graduate of Tidioute High School and a WWII Veteran in the Army Air Corp. He joined at 17, and was stationed in England flying in a B-24. He was in the 453rd Bomber Group out of Buckingham England, 1943-1945.
George married Anne Louise Sundell on March 12, 1947, in the Tidioute Methodist Church. They raised their family in Tidioute, and George barbered with his father, Hobson, and grandfather, George B., for many years at McKown's Barbershop in Tidioute. He moved to West Palm Beach, FL in 1974 to begin a career with the Post Office. Many will remember him from the maintenance staff of the Warren Post Office, as he transferred between Warren and Flordia Post Offices. He retired in 1996 from the Lake Worth Post office in Lake Worth, FL at age 70.
He was one of life's unforgettable characters, always ready with a joke or a helping hand. He was a great story teller and a practical joker; he made quite an impression on people and made friends everywhere he went. Cambridge was his family, including the aides and residents. He loved to fly and obtained his private pilot's license in his 60's and was a member of AOPA. He and his wife enjoyed flying around Florida.
He was a 32nd Degree Mason and the oldest living member of the Olive Temple Lodge #557. He was a past master in 1953. George was also a member of the Pequinot Yeager VFW, Tidioute Lions Club, The American Legion and the Tidioute Methodist Church. Every Memorial Day, he marched and said "Flander's Field" or the Gettysburg Address during Ceremonies at the cemetery.
George is survived by his daughter, Judith Fitch, and husband, Todd; his son, John McKown, and wife, Marcia; and two grandsons, Hobson McKown, State College, PA, and Samuel McKown, and wife, Sarah, England.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death on January 22, 2010, by his wife, Anne L, McKown.
Friends will be received on Friday, November 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Peterson - Blick Funeral Home, Inc, 1003 Penn Ave., E., Warren, PA, and on Saturday, November 29, from 10 to 11 a.m., at which time, a funeral service will be held there, Rev. Ralph Culp, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in Warren County Memorial Park.
