Eugene G. Schwanke, 79, of Warren, died Sunday, March 4, 2018, at the Warren Manor. Eugene was born August 30, 1938, in Warren, PA. He was the son of the late Carl L. and Bernice (Waite) Schwanke.
Gene was a 1957 graduate of Warren High School and served in the Army National Guard. He was employed as a draftsman with the former Pittsburgh Demoine Steel Company, Dorcon, Struthers Wells Corporation and the Warren Erection Company. Gene was a member of the Moose Lodge and was a former 32nd Degree Mason the Joseph Warren Lodge #0726 Free and Accepted Masons. A gifted vocalist, Gene was also a bass singer in the Conewango Clippers Barbershop Quartet and served as the director of the Sweet Adelines. He was also involved in several other Barbershop Quartets. In his younger years, Gene coached Warren Little League and the Hot Stove League.
He is survived by three sons, John Schwanke, and wife, Kelly, of Scandia, Mark Schwanke, and wife, Faye, of Russell, and David Schwanke, and wife, Bonnie, also of Russell; one brother, Donald Schwanke, of Greenhurst, NY; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by a son, Todd "Birdman" Schwanke; and brother, Wayne Schwanke.
Friends will be received at the Peterson-Blick Funeral Home, Inc. 1003 Penn. Ave. E., Warren, on Wednesday, March 7, from 6 to 8 p.m., and at the Russell United Methodist Church, 19 N. Main St., Russell, on Thursday, March 8, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m, at which time a funeral service will be held there.
Private burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery.
