IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Daniel Germain
Lareau
June 13, 1945 – August 17, 2002
Daniel Germain Lareau, M.D., 77, passed away in his sleep at home on Saturday, August 17, 2002. He was born August 24, 1924, in Swanton, Vermont, a son of the late Alphonse and Marie-Rose (Lanou) Lareau, being raised on
a farm in Northern Vermont until eighth grade when he left home to attend a French/English bilingual preparatory school taught by the Fathers of St. Edmund's, who had come from Pontigny, France to found St. Michael's College in Winooski, Vt., as well as St. Edmund's in Swanton.
He served as Senior Aviator on the U.S.S. Helena which conducted an around the world cruise in 1946. Dr. Lareau went to Medical School at the University of Vermont, completed residency training in Internal Medicine, became board certified and was in private practice for ten years. He then trained in Radiology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, passed the Radiology Board exams and came to Warren in 1967 to direct an extensively modernized department for 23 years.
As a Warren resident Dr. Lareau served as President of the Pennsylvania Radiological Society in 1985 and also served as chairman of various commissions for the society. He was named Councilor from Pennsylvania to the National level for radiology for six years.
Always a sports enthusiast and booster, Dr. Lareau won early local fame in Vermont as the captain of the University of Vermont Hockey team, and was an expert boxer in the Navy. He won many tennis championships at the Conewango Valley Country Club, and tournaments sponsored by the state Radiological Society, and local city tourneys. His interest and participation has been duly noted in the promotion of varsity tennis for boys and girls at Warren Area High School.
A former Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, Dr. Lareau taught medicine at the University of Kentucky School of Medicine, and while living in Warren published multiple research articles in major medical journals, and was recognized as a medical leader being named a Fellow of the American College of Physicians as well as a Fellow of the American College of Radiology. He was an official surveyor for the American College of Radiology active in preserving the integrity of radiology as a medical specialty through performing hospital inspections and in voicing his concern on the national level against the interpretation of radiographic procedures and studies by those with inadequate training and experience. He believed these efforts were the most noteworthy of his medical career.
Dr. Lareau was an active member of Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church, Warren. He was chosen by his peers at Warren General Hospital to serve a term as Chairman of the Medical Department.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his eldest son, Daniel Craig Lareau at age 13, and by 5 brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his wife, of 57 years Alice "Linda" (Showalter) Lareau, whom he married on June 13, 1945 at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida; four sons, David Michael Lareau, M.D., Massachusetts, Richard Dennis Lareau, MSEE, Massachusetts, Christopher Lawrence Lareau, D.O., Warren, and Lawrence Germain Lareau, M.D., Warren; two sisters, Claire Lareau, R.N., of Chicago, Illinois, and Jeanne D'Arc (Lareau) Ryan, R.N., of Vienna, Virginia; and nine grandchildren.
