Obituary

Daniel R. Harpster, 90, of Warren, PA, passed away following a brief illness Wednesday, May 15, 2024, four days shy of his 91st birthday at the Kinzua Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Warren, PA. Dan was born May 19, 1933, in Lock Haven, PA, the son of the late Daniel L. and Myrtle M. (Meeder) Harpster. He was a 1951 graduate of Lock Haven High School and a 1957 graduate of Mansfield State College and received his Masters of music education at Penn State University in 1960. Dan served in the U. S. Army from 1953-1955 as an instructor in electronics and was the conductor of the Signal Core Army Band in Camp Gordon, GA. He taught in West Springfield and Albion from 1957-1960 when he moved to Warren where he taught instrumental music from which he retired in 1991. Dan was a member of the First Methodist Church where he sang in the choir for over 50 years and was a member of the Madrigals and bell choir. Dan was conductor of the Zem Zem Shrine Band for many years and was a member of a German band, "The Happy Musicians" in Erie. He taught classes for Edinboro University off campus in Warren for eight years. Dan was conductor of the Warren Civic Orchestra for 14 years and was a member of the Elks Community Band and was past exalted ruler of Elks Lodge #223. He was a member of the North Star Lodge #241, Phi Mu Alpha National music fraternity, and Elks Lodge #223. Dan loved to hunt and fish and was a big Penn State fan having season football tickets for over 50 years, going to many away games and bowl games. Dan is survived by his wife, Patricia A. (Ellenberger) Harpster, whom he married on January 23, 1955 in Jersey Shore, PA; four children, Cathy Hagg and husband Doug of Warren, Lisa Christie and husband Tom of Warren, Wendy Voty of Warren, and Amy Miller and husband Jerry of Colleyville, TX; nine grandchildren Dan Hagg and companion Ruth, Nicole Arbaugh, Taylor Christie and companion Melissa, Seth Voty and companion Ashley, Tyler Voty, Adam Miller and companion Karen, Parris Thompson and husband Drummond, Nate Miller, and Danielle Miller; six great grandchildren, Nicholas Hagg, Harper Christie, Madison McDunn, Lettie Christie, Gavin Arbaugh, Maddox Arbaugh; several nieces and one nephew. In addition to his parents, Dan was preceded in death by two sons-in-law, Jeff Nicklas, and Tim Voty. Friends will be received at Peterson-Blick Funeral Home Inc., 1003 Penna Ave. E., Warren, PA, on Friday, May 17, 2024, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm and for one hour prior to a Celebration of Life service to be held at First Methodist Church, 200 Market St., Warren, PA, at 11:00am Saturday, May 18, 2024, with Reverend Mike Rutenber, pastor, officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests Memorial Contributions be made to First Methodist Church music fund, or to Warren Music Conservatory, 220 Penna. Ave. W., Warren, PA.
