Charles A. "Big Dad" Nelson, 83, of Warren, PA, died Saturday, March 5, 2016 at Warren General Hospital. Charles was born September 9, 1932 in Kane, PA. He was the son of the late Joseph Albert and Ellen (Hanson) Nelson.
Charles proudly served his country during the Korean War as a Gunner's Mate in the US Navy. After over eight years of service, he came to work in Warren at the Pittsburgh-Des Moines Company, retiring as head of the machine shop. For many years, Charles bowled for the PDM bowling team. He also enjoyed fishing, and was a member of the American Legion.
He is survived by his five children, Charles A. Nelson, Jr., and wife, Janet, of Union City, PA, Jeffrey M. Nelson, of Vandergrift, PA, Jamie L. McClement, of Bradenton, FL, Stacey L. Nelson, of Bradford, PA, and Terri D. Larson, and husband, Rick, of Middletown, DE; 12 grandchildren, Jeremy Nelson, Jessica Nelson, Cody Nelson, Brittany Nelson, Wesley Nelson, Lindsey McClement, Kailee McClement, Ryan Nelson, Austin Nelson, Kristi Larson, Lauren Larson and Kyle Larson; 6 great-grandchildren, Caleb, Logyn, Carter, Akajiah, Chloe and Avin; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his former wife, Beverly Nelson Fehlman; two brothers, Leonard and Robert Nelson; and granddaughter, Jennifer M. Nelson.
Friends will be received at the Peterson - Blick Funeral Home, Inc, 1003 Penn Ave., E., Warren on Tuesday, March 8 from 5 to 7 p.m., and on Wednesday, March 9, from 10 to 11 a.m., at which time, a funeral service will be held there, with Pastor Wally Mapes officiating.
Burial with military honors will be at Oakland Cemetery, Warren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions be made to Warren County Veterans Council, 204 Fourth Ave., Warren, PA 16365 or Paws Along The River, 212 Elm Street, Warren, PA 16365
