Obituary

Alice Mae Rice, 96, formerly of Warren, passed away on Wednesday, May 3, at the Rouse Home.  She was born on January 30, 1921 in Jersey Shore, Pa. to her parents Oscar and Minnie Marshall, now deceased.  She was one of five sisters and her early years were spent on a small farm outside of Jersey Shore.  In her high school years she met David K. Rice.  Subsequently and after completing her degree in Elementary Education at Lock Haven State Teacher's College.  During her college years she worked at the Woolrich Woolen Mill.  Alice moved to Philadelphia, Pa. where she married Dr. Rice and taught at the Overbrook School for the Blind.  Upon the completion of her husband's Veterinary Degree they moved to Bethlehem, Pa., then to the Warren area and then to Starbrick in 1950.  She was integrally involved in the operation of the Veterinary practice but found time to teach one-half time at the Youngsville Elementary School.  In addition to her teaching, she was very much involved in writing, publishing, painting, gardening (especially flowers), crocheting, knitting, and traveling (she traveled to all fifty states). Alice was involved with the Warren Art League, the Warren County Library and a number of other non-profit interests.  She resided in Starbrick until she moved to the Rouse Home six years ago.


She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years on November 30, 2012.  She has one sister, Venna Jean and she has four children: Mike of Garnet Valley, Pa., Bob of Rockville, Md., Bill of Kalispell, Mt., and Caroline Sorensen of Starbrick. She had thirteen grandchildren and (at last count) thirty –six great grand-children.


Funeral arrangements are being handled by Peterson-Blick Funeral Home.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Irvine Presbyterian Church or the 'Friends of the Rouse, Rouse Home.  The funeral will be at the discretion of the family.
