Sally Nelson Metzgar, of Cobham Park Road, Warren, PA. passed away peacefully, in Erie, on July 19, 2019, with her loving husband of 60 years by her side. Sally was born on July 4, 1936, in Warren, to the late George W. and Geraldine (Dietsch) Nelson. She was a 1954 graduate of Warren Area High School. Sally’s early career began at Bell Telephone. She then worked at The Pennsylvania State University in State College, PA for the Department of the Navy in the Ordinance Research Lab (ORL). Her favorite employment was in the family owned and operated business, North Penn Pipe & Supply, Inc. where she spent her days from 1977-2009. While in high school, Sally modeled extensively. As a young wife and mother living in Latrobe, PA, Sally was a model for West Penn Power and was frequently shown in the West Penn Power family magazine. She was a member of the Junior Woman’s League of Latrobe. Upon returning to Warren, Sally became active in the YWCA and held several officer positions over a period of many years. Sally was baptized in the First Presbyterian Church of Warren and she actively participated in the Presbyterian Women’s Circle’s, was a Sunday School teacher, and volunteered for and donated to the Presbyterian Church rummage sale for decades. Sally had a true flair for interior decorating and was able to showcase her abilities in her homes. Sally and her husband have been philanthropically involved with numerous organizations, most notably The Pennsylvania State University. They donated funds for the Robert and Sally Metzgar Admissions and Alumni Center at Penn State Behrend and created the Robert and Sally Metzgar Leadership Scholarship, which empowers three students per semester to pursue their education. In recent years, Sally was a member of the Blue Stocking Club, Antique Study Club, Warren County Historical Society, and the Garden Club. She and her daughter, Kathy, enjoyed taking Special Studies Classes at Chautauqua Institution over the last several years. Sally’s hobbies were gardening, genealogy, and reading. Her greatest enjoyment came from spending time with her family and pets. Sally is survived by her loving husband, Robert Metzgar; her children, Kelly and wife Joany Metzgar, of Warren, Kathy and husband Larry Lang, of Warren; her grandchildren, Kyle and wife Leila Metzgar, of Houston, Drew Lang, of State College; and two great grandchildren, Bellamy and Madeline Metzgar, of Houston. Friends will be received from 10:00-11:00 am on Saturday, August 17, 2019, at the First Presbyterian Church, 300 Market St. Warren, PA. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 am with Rev. Rebecca Taylor and Rev. Matthew Laffey, co-officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made to PAWS Along the River, 212 Elm St. Warren, PA 146365 or to the First Presbyterian Church, 300 Market St. Warren, PA 16365.
