Troy Howard Onink, 51, passed away on Friday, August 24, 2018 after an extended illness. Troy was a lifelong resident of Warren County and currently resided in Russell with his wife Heidi von Kleist. He and Heidi married on August 24, 2002. Troy graduated from Eisenhower High School in 1985, and Slippery Rock University with a Master’s Degree in Cardiac Rehab. A nationally-recognized authority on paying for college, Troy was the CEO of Stratagee and a contributor to Forbes where he wrote the widely followed blog College Crossroads. Troy was also a columnist for Investment News, and a contributor to Private Wealth, Financial Advisor, myStockOptions.com and NAPFA Advisor. He was regularly featured by Yahoo! Finance, Forbes Magazine, CNN/Money, Fox News, CBS, Bloomberg, Reuters and the Wall Street Journal. Troy was the proud father of three daughters; Tess, Morgan and Hannah Onink. He was also an amazing uncle to his five nephews, one niece, 7 great-nephews and 7 great-nieces. He is survived by his mother, Joyce Onink of Sugar Grove, his sisters Tammy (Barry) Van Ord, Terri (Neal) Hoisington of Sugar Grove, and brother Todd (Lisa) Onink of Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his father Gail Onink of Sugar Grove. Troy was a world traveler due to his career, but the trips he enjoyed the most were the ones he got to take his family along. From fishing trips to Northern Michigan and Ontario to tagging along on business trips to Universities, he always encouraged his family to join him in his adventures. He was an excellent cook and a master with a smoker, often spending hours, if not days, in prep before parties. He also enjoyed his excursions to the race track with the plumb colored crazy racing team. Troy had “the gift of gab” and was known for his story telling and attention to detail. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, gardening, attending local sporting events and any activity that he could share with his family. Through the ups and downs of his life, it was his deep faith that inspired his decisions. Friends and family will be received at the Sugar Grove Free Methodist church, 210 Jamestown St, Sugar Grove, PA 16350, from 5pm – 7pm, on Wednesday, August 29. A Memorial service will follow. Memorial contributions may be made to New Creation Church, 116 S Main St, Jamestown, NY 14701, Sugar Grove Free Methodist Church, 210 Jamestown St, Sugar Grove, PA 16350 or Hospice of Warren County, 2 W Crescent Park, Warren, PA 16365.

Troy was an incredible mentor, colleague and friend. I'm deeply saddened by his passing, but know that his fight is over and that he is in perfect peace with Our Lord, Jesus. I consider myself beyond blessed to have known him. Every bit of expertise I've gained around paying for college I owe to Troy.

I'll miss you, pal. But, I'll never forget what you've taught me, our conversations around faith and family, as well as your undying courage and positive attitude. You were a man that lived with great purpose and intention. Heidi and family, my thoughts and prayers are with you. ~Blessings, Joe

My deepest sympathy for the passing of your loved one Troy H. Onink. During this difficult tome of grief and sorrow may you be comforted by what Jesus said and did. Jesus said their will be a resurrection. John 5:28-29. The resurrection of Lazarus who had been dead for four days and others gives us hope of what he will do in the future when he rules as King of God’s Kingdom for a Thousand Years. Dan 2:44 Then we will be able to see our loved ones again. Acts 24:15

I worked on a couple of cases with Troy and we became friends. He was very knowledgeable in his specialty of college funding, a great family man, and very humorous to be around. May his memory be for a blessing for his family and friends.

I am so sorry to hear of Troy's passing. I was pleased to meet him and spend time with him because of his work for Forbes. His interview with me, which occurred several years ago, is rediscovered several times a year as counselors and parents find it online. His preparation for his work made it successful, and I knew I was in the presence of a thoughtful, enthusiastic, intelligent, and committed professional. And I sense he was an even better family man. My thoughts, and those of many others, are with you.
