Alice Mae Rice, 96, formerly of Warren, passed away on Wednesday, May 3, at the Rouse Home.  She was born on January 30, 1921 in Jersey Shore, Pa. to her parents Oscar and Minnie Marshall, now deceased.  She was one of five sisters and her early years were spent on a small farm outside of Jersey Shore.  In her high school years she met David K. Rice.  Subsequently and after completing her degree in Elementary Education at Lock Haven State Teacher’s College.  During her college years she worked at the Woolrich Woolen Mill.  Alice moved to Philadelphia, Pa. where she married Dr. Rice and taught at the Overbrook School for the Blind.  Upon the completion of her husband’s Veterinary Degree they moved to Bethlehem, Pa., then to the Warren area and then to Starbrick in 1950.  She was integrally involved in the operation of the Veterinary practice but found time to teach one-half time at the Youngsville Elementary School.  In addition to her teaching, she was very much involved in writing, publishing, painting, gardening (especially flowers), crocheting, knitting, and traveling (she traveled to all fifty states). Alice was involved with the Warren Art League, the Warren County Library and a number of other non-profit interests.  She resided in Starbrick until she moved to the Rouse Home six years ago.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years on November 30, 2012.  She has one sister, Venna Jean and she has four children: Mike of Garnet Valley, Pa., Bob of Rockville, Md., Bill of Kalispell, Mt., and Caroline Sorensen of Starbrick. She had thirteen grandchildren and (at last count) thirty –six great grand-children.

To family and friends of Alice;
Alice was a great lady. It was our privilege to have known her through the Irvine, Pa. Presbyterian church and various trips to see 'Doc' for our pets. Clara and I always felt Alice was a literary genius and she loved talking about the books she had read. Raising that big family also reflects her genius as a loving mother and wife.
It was great knowing Alice...and she will always be in our fondest memories...(along with 'Doc'). Now she is with Doc...and together may they enjoy the Lord forever!
With God's love,
Pastor Tim and Clara Olsen

To the family & friend's of Alice Rice, I'm so sorry to hear of her passing. She is a remarkable woman & someone whom you would never forget. Mrs. Rice as I knew her was my teacher at Irvine Elementary. I saw her at the Warren Fair about 21 years ago when I had my newborn daughter with me. She was all smiles and never forgot my name no matter how long it had been. May she rest in peace!

I was sorry to read of the loss of your Mom. We are always too young to lose our parents. You are in my thoughts.

To the whole family: Sending my deepest sympathy and prayers to all of you in the loss of your mom, grandma and great grandma. In the over 12 yrs I worked for Doc in his veterinary office, I got to hear many stories of all the family members and your parents were both part of my life for many years and very special people to me. They are together in Heaven now and have left a great legacy in all of you . Treasure all the memories and rejoice in their long, inspiring lives.
