Julie Fike Tencate, 60, of Russell, PA., passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 26, 2017 surrounded by family at the John & Orpha Blair Hospice Residence after a hard-fought battle with ALS. She was born July 17, 1956 in Oil City, PA to the late Clarence and Nancy Nurss Fike.  A lifelong Warren County resident, Julie was a 1974 graduate of Tidioute High School.

Throughout her work life, Julie held various service positions with Blair Corporation, Warren General Hospital, Thorne’s Bilo, Warren County School District, Warren State Hospital, Marienville Correctional Institute, Ekey’s Florist and most recently Warren Walmart. However, her most rewarding job was being a mother and a proud grandmother to her beautiful grandchildren.

Julie’s enthusiasm for community involvement was evident by her 10+ year dedication to various Warren County 4-H clubs and programs. Julie’s eagerness to support her children and countless youth throughout the 4-H program meant that she played a special mentoring role at the regional, national and international levels. Julie and her family opened their home to two young women from Taiwan and Japan as a host family for the International Foreign Youth Exchange (IFYE) program. Even after her children were grown, Julie was often spotted at high speeds on a golf cart during the Warren County Fair, volunteering her time for many years. Julie was also a former member of Eastern Star, Tionesta, PA Chapter.

Julie’s love for the outdoors, adventure and travel was known by most, always eager to share countless stories of priceless cross country adventures and country music concerts she shared with her late husband, Ralph. She was known to race to the lawnmower, nearly knocking anyone else off, to ensure proper lawn patterning and an hour or two of peace. Her ability to garden and to bring plants and flowers back from the brink of death was a gift she possessed, even possibly a superpower. Aside from lamenting the snow and cold weather of winter, Julie could be found baking mouthwatering desserts and other high calorie treats to share. Her famous rice pudding recipe was passed on to others, scrutinized by many, but duplicated by none.

A common thread woven throughout her work, her community involvement and her hobbies was her love for people. Her job choices and daily life were filled with helping and serving others. Her family describes Julie as genuine, a lion at heart and she didn’t sugar-coat things. Julie’s abundance of pride and love for family is the special legacy she leaves behind.

She is survived by her children and grandchildren whom she lived for and loved endlessly, daughter, Jamie Salapek Lindemuth (Jay) and children Gavin and McKenna Russell, PA; son, Jesse Salapek (Britney Landree) Erie, PA and daughter Logan Grove Russell, PA; Leyna Bimber, mother of Logan Grove, Russell, PA; step-daughter, Jamie Tencate Hasbrouck (Larry) Warren, PA; ex-husband, Jim Salapek (Debra) Warren, PA; four siblings, Vicky Fike McCauley (John) Tidioute, PA; Ed Fike (Teresa) Tidioute, PA; Shari Fike McCandrew (Scott) Brackenridge, PA; Jeff Fike (Kristi) Corry, PA and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

In addition to her parents, Julie is preceded in death by the love of her life and late husband, Ralph M. Tencate, whom she married on April 15, 2000, and one niece, Melanie McCauley Burris.

Family and friends will be received on Friday, March 3, 2017 from 5-8pm at the Wiltsie Community Church, 2981 Swede Hill Road, Russell, PA. A celebration of Julie’s life will also be held at the Wiltsie Church on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 11 a.m., with Pastor Todd Venman officiating.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to place memorials in Julie’s name may do so through Hospice of Warren County, 1 Main Avenue, Warren, PA 16365 and the ALS Association, Western PA Chapter, 416 Lincoln Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15208.
